Russian-Azerbaijani relations have sharply deteriorated. Baku refused to participate in the 23rd meeting of the inter-parliamentary commission with the Russian Federation. The delegation headed by the first Deputy Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ali Akhmedov will not go to Moscow. All cultural events organized by public and private institutions in Russia have been canceled in Azerbaijan, the country’s Ministry of Culture announced on Wednesday. We are talking about concerts, festivals, performances, exhibitions and other events.:

On June 27, the Russian Federal Security Service conducted a special operation at various addresses in Yekaterinburg, during which two Azerbaijanis were killed and several wounded. They are suspected of involvement in the murder in 2001. About a dozen Azerbaijanis were detained, and yesterday Russian law enforcement agencies launched operations in other cities.

The Azerbaijani media is engaged in blatant anti-Russian propaganda, while Moscow is puzzled by Baku’s reaction, surprised that they were helped during and after the 44-day war, and Azerbaijan does not show proper gratitude. Having got what he wanted, Aliyev is now showing Russia his teeth.

The Russian-Azerbaijani escalation may both negatively affect the South Caucasus and become an opportunity for Armenia to restore broken relations with Moscow. A reasonable government would have done just that. Instead, the Armenian Foreign Ministry announced today that Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan will not participate in the meeting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers scheduled for today in Kyrgyzstan.:
